An estimated 300 people attended the December 1980 charity football match between a team of Laing players and English actor Dennis Watermans All Stars. The match was held to raise money for the Jerry Doherty Heart Fund. The game finished 2-2 and £ 452 in total was raised. Stars on Dennis Watermans team included Jan Webster, ex-England rugby scrum half; Danny Rioch, ex-Aston Villa; Jonathan Kyd, from childrens TV programme Pipkins; John Inchmore, Worcester County cricketer; and Bob McNab, ex-Arsenal full back. Playing on the Laing side were Dave Hall, Tim Smith, Kevin Blande, Geoff Seager, Richard Sawyer, Chris Martin, Dave Offord, Graham Hollis, Will Kellett, Mike Reed, Bob Louden, Dave Butcher and Phil Brown. In this photo print, we see the heartwarming moment when Chris Martin, the team captain of Laings Sports Club, shakes hands with English actor Dennis Waterman before a charity football match at Elstree Sports Club. The image captures the spirit of camaraderie and unity as both men proudly hold up a Laing Sports Club pennant. The charity football match took place in December 1980 and drew an impressive crowd of approximately 300 people. The event aimed to raise funds for the Jerry Doherty Heart Fund, a noble cause that touched many hearts. Despite being on opposing teams, both sides played their best game, resulting in an exciting 2-2 draw. Dennis Waterman's All Stars team boasted an array of notable personalities from various sports and entertainment fields. Jan Webster, Danny Rioch, Jonathan Kyd, John Inchmore, and Bob McNab were among the stars who showcased their skills alongside Waterman himself. On the other side stood a formidable lineup representing Laing players including Dave Hall, Tim Smith, Kevin Blande, Geoff Seager, and Richard Sawyer. Together with Chris Martin leading them onto the field with determination and pride.
