EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment at the Laing Sports Ground in Elstree, Barnet, Greater London. It shows English actor Dennis Waterman shaking hands with Geoff Seager and handing him a cheque after a charity football match organized by Doug Bowden. In December 1980, approximately 300 people gathered to watch the match between a team of Laing players and Dennis Waterman's All Stars. The aim was to raise funds for the Jerry Doherty Heart Fund, and they successfully collected £452 in total. The game ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Dennis Waterman's team boasted an impressive lineup that included Jan Webster (ex-England rugby scrum half), Danny Rioch (ex-Aston Villa player), Jonathan Kyd (from children's TV programme Pipkins), John Inchmore (Worcester County cricketer), and Bob McNab (ex-Arsenal full back). On the other side, representing Laing were Dave Hall, Tim Smith, Kevin Blande, Geoff Seager himself, Richard Sawyer, Chris Martin, Dave Offord, Graham Hollis, Will Kellett, Mike Reed, Bob Louden, Dave Butcher and Phil Brown. The image was published in January-February 1981 as part of Laings' monthly newsletter called "Team Spirit" not associated with the company itself. This snapshot showcases unity among sports enthusiasts coming together for a noble cause while enjoying their shared passion for football.
