Edgbaston Reservoir, Rotton Park, Birmingham. Members of the Midland Sailing Club sailing an Optimist sailing dinghy at Edgbaston Reservoir.
Edgbaston Reservoir, originally called Rotton Park Reservoir, was formed in the 1820s through the enlargement of an existing pool known as Roach Pool. The Midland Sailing Club was founded in June 1894. Originally it had three branches (Edgbaston, Norton, and Barnt Green), although only the Edgbaston branch continued sailing after the First World War. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a serene day at Edgbaston Reservoir in Rotton Park, Birmingham. Members of the Midland Sailing Club can be seen gracefully maneuvering an Optimist sailing dinghy across the glistening waters. The vibrant red, white, and blue sails beautifully contrast against the tranquil backdrop of this historic boating lake. Edgbaston Reservoir, formerly known as Rotton Park Reservoir, has a rich history dating back to the 1820s when it was expanded from Roach Pool. This Georgian-era reservoir has been a popular destination for sport and recreation for centuries. The Midland Sailing Club itself was established in June 1894 and originally had three branches; however, only the Edgbaston branch continued its sailing activities after World War I. The image showcases not only the skillful art of sailing but also highlights water sports as a beloved pastime enjoyed by enthusiasts in this picturesque location. It is evident that this moment frozen in time represents more than just a leisurely activity; it symbolizes camaraderie, passion for nautical adventures, and appreciation for nature's beauty. Simon Inglis masterfully captured this scene through his lens, allowing us to relish in both the tranquility of Edgbaston Reservoir and the excitement that comes with water transport and sporting endeavors.
