River Road Transport Suspension Bridge Gorge Toll Booth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, spanning the Avon Gorge in North Somerset. Designed by the visionary Isambard Kingdom Brunel between 1829 and 31, the bridge's construction began in 1831 but was halted in 1853 due to financial difficulties. A decade later, in Brunel's memory, a company was formed to complete the project, and on 8 December 1864, the bridge was finally opened to the public. The bridge's suspension design, a marvel of engineering at the time, is evident in this image, with its elegant arches and intricate suspension cables. The toll booth, a necessary feature for the maintenance of the bridge, stands proudly on the bridge's northern approach. The bridge's roadway, a vital transport link, winds its way across the gorge, connecting the picturesque villages of Clifton and Leigh Woods. The Avon River, meandering through the gorge, adds to the bridge's scenic beauty. The rugged cliffs of Leigh Woods, with their lush greenery, provide a striking contrast to the industrial might of the bridge. This photograph, taken from Clifton Down in the north between 1864 and 1920, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the bridge's enduring significance as a symbol of engineering prowess and a testament to Brunel's vision.
