EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at Carlisle Technical College, located on Strand Road in Carlisle, Cumbria. The image showcases a class of young men engrossed in their studies within an engineering workshop. Built between 1951 and 1953, Carlisle Technical College opened its doors officially on February 18th, 1954. Designed to accommodate up to 1500 students, the college provided state-of-the-art facilities for various disciplines including arts and sciences. Its laboratories and workshops catered to motor, mechanical, and electrical engineering as well as textiles, woodwork, building construction, and pure sciences. The impressive building faced southwards while the workshops, labs, and main entrance were situated on the north side. This architectural arrangement ensured optimal lighting conditions for practical learning experiences. This nostalgic snapshot from the 1950s not only highlights the importance of technical education but also reflects a pivotal era of post-war progress where further education played a crucial role in shaping future generations. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive with utmost care and attention to detail; this print serves as a testament to both educational institutions' rich history and the dedication of those who pursued knowledge within its walls.
