EDITORS COMMENTS

This haunting print captures the macabre secret hidden within Aston Hall, Aston, Birmingham. Once a historic building turned municipal visitor attraction, this eerie skeleton of a woman sat undisturbed in the concealed room beneath the stairs. The photograph, taken by Percy Thomas Deakin between 1885-1905, transports us back to a time when secrets were carefully guarded and mysteries lurked behind closed doors. The image reveals an unsettling scene - a porters chair swings on hinges, cunningly designed to be pinned back into place and conceal the bone-filled space behind it. As we gaze upon this chilling sight, our imagination runs wild with questions about who this woman was and how she met her untimely demise. Aston Hall's dark history is brought to life through Deakin's lens. It serves as a reminder that even grand buildings have their hidden stories – tales of tragedy and intrigue that lie just out of sight. This photograph invites us to explore beyond what meets the eye; to delve into the shadows where secrets are kept. As we contemplate this image, let us remember that history holds many secrets waiting to be uncovered. Through photographs like these, we can catch glimpses of forgotten narratives and connect with those who came before us in ways unimaginable.
