EDITORS COMMENTS
Breathe in that sea air! This photo print, titled JLP01_08_021440, captures a delightful moment on the shores of Ilfracombe, North Devon in June 1954. In this side view shot, we see a man, women and children posed on the beach with boats gently bobbing in the water beyond. This image is a testament to the joyous spirit of Laing staff and their families during their annual outings. After a seven-year hiatus following World War II, Laing revived these cherished trips for their employees. The 1954 outing was particularly special as it included seven excursions over five weeks for staff and families from South-West England and South Wales. The scene exudes an atmosphere of pure happiness: smiles adorn every face as they embrace the fresh coastal breeze. Despite the overcast sky, there is an undeniable sense of warmth emanating from this group's camaraderie. Fashionably dressed in coats suitable for seaside adventures in the 1950s, these individuals embody both style and relaxation. The moored sailing boat adds an extra touch of nautical charm to this already idyllic setting. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this print serves as a time capsule capturing not just a day trip to Ilfracombe but also an era defined by its simple pleasures and strong community bonds.
