Laing Spirit People Production Recreation Acting

Putting on a Show - A Glimpse into the Dramatic Section of Laing Sports Club

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a momentous performance by the members of the Dramatic Section at Goodwyn Hall, Mill Hill in Barnet, Greater London. The talented actors are seen passionately portraying their own rendition of Elmer Harris' play, "Johnny Belinda". Taking place on the 19th, 20th, and 21st of October in 1961, this production transported audiences to the remote reaches of northern Canada. The heartwarming story revolves around a young deaf girl and her journey through life's challenges. Not only did this theatrical endeavor showcase exceptional talent within the Sports Club community but it also served as an opportunity for charity. At the door, generous donations were collected amounting to an impressive total of £8 and 10s for the Royal Association in Aid of Deaf and Dumb. Published in December that same year in Laings monthly newsletter "Team Spirit" this image stands as a testament to both creativity and compassion. It encapsulates not just a mere performance but also reflects how art can be harnessed to make a positive impact on society. Preserved by Historic England Archive with utmost care, this photograph is more than just an artistic relic; it represents unity among individuals who share a passion for recreation, people's well-being, drama, acting - all brought together under one roof at Goodwyn Hall.
