EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in the film conservation process at the British Film Institute's John Paul Getty Jr Conservation Centre. Two dedicated staff members can be seen operating video tape machines in the state-of-the-art facility located in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. Designed by renowned architects Nickolls, King Design and constructed by Laings Chiltern Region, this impressive building was completed in 1987. Named after philanthropist John Paul Getty Jr, it served as a hub for preserving and restoring precious films. The centre consisted of a concrete single-storey storage building specifically designed to house nitrate film, known for its highly flammable nature. Additionally, there was a one and two-storey structure dedicated to film restoration with an atrium serving as its focal point. The image showcases the dedication and expertise required to safeguard our cinematic heritage. These skilled professionals meticulously handle video tapes with utmost care, ensuring that valuable footage is preserved for future generations to enjoy. Their work represents the intersection of science, technology, television, cinema, and film. This photograph from A© Historic England Archive offers us a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into conserving our rich cinematic history while highlighting the importance of institutions like the British Film Institute in safeguarding cultural treasures for years to come.
