EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a moment in time at the construction site of Fawley Reservoir in Hampshire. The workers, donned in their rugged work attire, are patiently queuing up at a mobile canteen for some much-needed refreshments. This image offers a glimpse into the daily lives of those involved in this monumental civil engineering project that commenced in September 1954. The reservoir was being built to serve the Esso Refinery Company, located nearby in Fawley. Situated at the head of Cadland Creek, this ambitious undertaking required damming an existing valley and constructing various essential components such as a spillway, stilling basin, and outfall. In this scene captured by A© Historic England Archive photographer Joh, we witness not only the physical labor involved but also the importance of sustenance during long hours on-site. The mobile canteen provided these hardworking individuals with nourishment and respite amidst their demanding tasks. This print serves as a testament to both human resilience and teamwork displayed by these dedicated workers who contributed to shaping Hampshire's landscape. It reminds us of the immense effort put forth by countless individuals behind-the-scenes to bring about progress and development within our communities.
