The Balkan States Exhibition - Earls Court - Old Japan

The Balkan States Exhibition at Earls Court in 1907 was really two exhibitions in one. The main event featured a large Balkan village with practical working exhibits by native workers (see: 10922981). In the Empress Hall (as shown on this postcard), one could visit Old Japan for an extra shilling (5p) and see a Nikko temple and bridge, teahouses, geisha and spring time in old Japan with waterfalls, lotus pond and cherry blossom. One could also watch basket workers, fan painters, porcelain painters, Kyoto embroiders, umbrella makers and a lantern painter at work. Date: 1907

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the magical world of Old Japan at the Balkan States Exhibition held at Earls Court in London, 1907. This postcard invites us to explore the Empress Hall, an enchanting addition to the main Balkan village event. For an extra shilling, visitors could immerse themselves in the authentic Japanese experience. The heart of Old Japan was a stunning replica of the Nikko Temple and bridge, complete with intricate torii gates, a serene lotus pond, and a tranquil cherry blossom grove. The temple's magnificent Buddha statue and pagoda stood proudly, exuding peace and serenity. The experience was not just visual; visitors could interact with skilled artisans showcasing their crafts. Watch as basket workers weaved intricate patterns, fan painters added delicate designs, porcelain painters created beautiful ceramics, Kyoto embroiderers stitched intricate patterns, umbrella makers crafted elegant parasols, and lantern painters brought the lanterns to life with vibrant colors. Among the many attractions were the graceful Geisha girls, who added an air of mystery and allure to the scene. This postcard is a window into the past, offering a glimpse of the Old Japan exhibition that captivated the hearts and minds of visitors over a century ago. Date: 1907. Empress Hall, Earls Court, London. A journey to the land of the Rising Sun, without leaving the heart of Europe.
