EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of departure for the Imperial Camel Corps from Cairo, Egypt during World War I. In the image, a trainload of camels is prepared to embark on their journey to the Front. The first truck of the train is filled with Australian soldiers, who are in charge of the camels and ensure their readiness for transport. Each animal is tethered to a line that runs the length of the truck, creating a scene of organized chaos. The Imperial Camel Corps was established in response to the challenging terrain of the Middle Eastern battlefields, where traditional horses and mules struggled to adapt. Camels, with their ability to traverse sand and carry heavy loads, proved to be invaluable in the desert campaigns. The photograph, taken at a railway siding in Cairo in 1916, offers a glimpse into the logistical efforts required to support the troops and their animals during this critical period in history. The Imperial Camel Corps played a significant role in the Sinai and Palestine Campaigns, contributing to the eventual Allied victory in the region. This image is a poignant reminder of the unique challenges and resourcefulness that characterized the First World War.
