The swimming pool on board the Berengaria

A " Bath Club" at Sea: the modern liners land-like buildings. Roman luxury aboard a giant liner crossing the Atlantic: a swimming bath modelled on that of Pompeii built of tiles and marble, with massive pillars and a glass roof. The swimming pool on board the Cunard ocean liner, Berengaria measuring 64 feet long by 41 feet wide, constructed of tiles and marble with mosaic work and fittings of bronze. Round the sides is a colonnade of massive pillars, supporting a glass roof which rises to the height of three decks above the bottom of the tank. Over the dressing rooms was a wide, upper gallery for spectators. A continuous cascade of fresh water entered the pool from a cascade at one end. The depth was graduated and 9 feet at its deepest. The ILN comments on the air of modern liners being akin to a palatial building on land and likens the pool to a similar one on board the White Star liner Majestic. Date: 1922

EDITORS COMMENTS
Aquatic Elegance at Sea: The Pompeii-Inspired Swimming Pool on Board the Berengaria Step aboard the majestic RMS Berengaria, a floating palace of the seas, and immerse yourself in the opulence of the 1920s. This photograph showcases the ship's Bath Club, a stunning swimming pool inspired by the grandeur of ancient Rome. Measuring an impressive 64 feet long and 41 feet wide, the pool is a marvel of design, crafted from tiles, marble, and bronze. The pool's sides are adorned with massive pillars, reminiscent of Roman architecture, supporting a glass roof that rises three decks above the waterline. The upper gallery offers a vantage point for spectators to watch the swimmers below, while the continuous cascade of fresh water enters the pool from an ornate fountain at one end. The depth of the pool is graduated, reaching a maximum of 9 feet, making it the perfect setting for both leisurely swims and invigorating laps. The Illustrated London News marveled at the modern liners' land-like buildings, comparing the pool to one on board the White Star liner Majestic. As you gaze upon this image, imagine the sensation of being transported back in time, surrounded by the elegance and luxury of the Roaring Twenties aboard the magnificent Berengaria. Let the tranquility of the water and the grandeur of the pool's design envelop you, as you sail across the Atlantic in style and sophistication.
