EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the revered figure of William Beveridge, Lord Bishop of St Asaph, in his 71st year of life. Born on March 22, 1637, in the historic town of Denbigh, Wales, Beveridge would go on to make significant contributions to the Church of England and the broader society of his time. Beveridge's ecclesiastical career began in 1661 when he was appointed as the Rector of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in Denbighshire. Over the next several decades, he rose through the ranks of the Church, eventually being consecrated as the Bishop of St Asaph in 1689. During his tenure as Bishop, Beveridge was known for his commitment to education and charitable works. He established a free grammar school in Denbigh and supported various charities, including the Foundation for the Relief of the Poor. Beveridge was also a prolific writer and scholar, penning numerous works on theology, history, and philosophy. His most famous work, "A Discourse Concerning the Unity of the Godhead," was published in 1683 and remains a significant contribution to the study of Trinitarian theology. Despite his many accomplishments, Beveridge faced challenges and controversies throughout his life. He was a vocal critic of the non-juring bishops who refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of King William III and Mary II, leading to his exile from Wales for a time. This print, created in the late 17th century, captures the wisdom and dignity of a man who dedicated his life to the Church and the betterment of his community. William Beveridge, Lord Bishop of St Asaph, remains an important figure in the history of Wales and the Church of England.
