In this illustration by Angus McBride, we witness a group of Homo neanderthalensis, our closest extinct relatives, in action at Swanscombe, a site of ancient human occupation in modern-day Kent, England. The scene unfolds on the banks of the river Thames, where Neanderthals are shown interacting with their environment around 400,000 years ago. Neanderthals, members of the Hominidae family, were robust and powerful great apes, adapted to the harsh European climate. They are often depicted as hulking brutes, but this illustration reveals their dexterity and agility. One Neanderthal is shown skillfully hunting a mammoth, using a spear or javelin to bring down the large mammal. Another is seen gathering plant materials, while a third cradles an infant, demonstrating their nurturing capabilities. Neanderthals were not the only hominids to inhabit Europe during this time. Homo heidelbergensis, their predecessors, lived there around 500,000 to 200,000 years ago.
