Ismail Pasha - Egypt

Isma il Pasha, known as Ismail the Magnificent (1830 - 1895), was Wali and subsequently Khedive of Egypt and Sudan from 1863 until he was removed at the behest of the British in 1879. While in power he greatly modernized Egypt and Sudan, but also put the country heavily in debt. His philosophy can be glimpsed in a statement he made in 1879: " My country is no longer in Africa; we are now part of Europe. It is therefore natural for us to abandon our former ways and to adopt a new system adapted to our social conditions."

EDITORS COMMENTS
Ismail Pasha, also known as Ismail the Magnificent, is depicted in this striking photograph taken during his reign as Wali (Governor) and later Khedive (Viceroy) of Egypt and Sudan from 1863 to 1879. Born in 1830, Ismail was a visionary leader who brought about significant modernization to Egypt and Sudan, transforming the region into a hub of cultural and technological advancements. Ismail's European-inspired hat and Western attire reflect his philosophy of embracing the modern world. In 1879, he famously declared, "My country is no longer in Africa; we are now part of Europe. It is therefore natural for us to abandon our former ways and to adopt a new system adapted to our social conditions." During his rule, Ismail oversaw the construction of the Suez Canal, the expansion of the railroad network, and the establishment of modern educational institutions. However, his ambitious projects came at a great cost, leaving Egypt heavily in debt and ultimately leading to his removal from power at the behest of the British in 1879. This photograph captures the essence of Ismail Pasha's reign, a time of great change and transformation in Egyptian history. The image of the Pasha, with his confident gaze and regal bearing, serves as a reminder of the indelible mark he left on the region, shaping its future and leaving a lasting legacy.
