Born into a noble family, Holles entered public service under Queen Elizabeth I and quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a capable military leader and a shrewd political strategist. During the Spanish Armada crisis, Holles was appointed as the Master of the Ordnance, responsible for the maintenance and supply of the English military's artillery. He played a crucial role in the preparations for the English defense against the Spanish invasion, overseeing the repair and fortification of coastal defenses, and the mobilization of the English fleet. The portrait, dated around the late 16th or early 17th century, shows Holles in his military regalia, wearing a fur-trimmed doublet and a hat adorned with feathers.
