King James I knights a tasty loin of beef - Arise Sir Loin

King James I knights a tasty loin of beef at Hoghton Tower, near Preston, Lancashire, in 1617. Historians are somewhat unsurpringly divided as to the likelihood and validity of this tale. A number of legends claim the naming of the sirloin cut from it being knighted by a monarch, although it is variously ascribed to Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and James I. According to the Lancashire tradition, James I drew his short sword and told the Hoghton Tower pages to bring the beef to him. They went down on their knees and the king said " Arise, Sir Loin." Date: 1617

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing 17th-century tableau, King James I performs an unprecedented knighting ceremony at Hoghton Tower, near Preston, Lancashire, in 1617. The monarch, dressed in his regal attire, draws his short sword and addresses the tasty loin of beef before him. With a flourish, he declares, "Arise, Sir Loin," bestowing a symbolic knighthood upon the succulent meat. Historians remain divided on the veracity of this intriguing tale. While some legends attribute the naming of the sirloin cut to Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, or James I, the Lancashire tradition holds that it was James I who performed this unique act. According to the story, the pages at Hoghton Tower knelt before the king as he addressed the beef, and the monarch's words gave rise to the name "Sir Loin." The scene is rich in detail, with the king's ornate throne, the ornate table setting, and the attentive pages adding to the grandeur of the moment. The air is filled with the tantalizing aroma of roasting meat, and the king's expression suggests a sense of enjoyment and merriment. A pot of mustard and a jar of Colman's-like condiment are present on the table, hinting at the savory flavors that would have accompanied the dish. This image offers a glimpse into the opulence and pageantry of the 17th century, and the tale of King James I knighting a loin of beef remains a fascinating piece of culinary and historical lore.
