The memorial was erected in the 1870s close to the hut where John Coleridge Patteson, the Anglican Bishop of Melanesia, was killed in 1871. However, his peaceful intentions were met with resistance from local leaders who saw his presence as a threat to their traditional ways. In 1871, during a visit to Nukapu Island, Patteson was ambushed and killed by a group of islanders.
