This poignant scene captures the aftermath of the Battle of Isandlwana (Isandhlwana), which took place on January 22, 1879, during the Zulu War. The sun had set, and the night had descended upon the battlefield, hiding the horrors that lay before. As Lieutenant Crealock and his surviving soldiers approached the final ridge, they sent Major Black and three companies of the 24th Regiment to secure a nearby hill. The neck of land between the two hills was crucial to gain control of the area. The silence of the night was broken only by the sound of footsteps as the soldiers marched down into the gloom below. The ground was still strewn with the remnants of the previous day's carnage, where 1,700 British soldiers had lost their lives in the bloodiest battle of the Zulu War.
