This print from the Royal Cornwall Museum takes us back in time to the 21st of July, 1916. The image captures a poignant moment outside the Royal Cornwall Infirmary in Truro, Cornwall during World War I. In this snapshot frozen in history, we witness a heartwarming scene filled with resilience and compassion. The composition showcases a diverse group of individuals: nurses, including Red Cross nurses, and patients - some adorned in military uniforms. Despite their varying roles and backgrounds, they stand united as one community against the backdrop of the infirmary building. The photographer Arthur William Jordan skillfully frames them all together. Among these brave souls are four wheelchair-bound patients who proudly join their comrades for this collective portrait. Their presence serves as a testament to both their own strength and determination as well as the unwavering support provided by those around them. This photograph not only immortalizes an important chapter in Cornish history but also symbolizes the indomitable spirit that prevailed amidst adversity during World War I. It stands as a tribute to all those who selflessly dedicated themselves to caring for others during such tumultuous times. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of visual storytelling, let us remember and honor those depicted here – heroes whose courage continues to inspire generations even today.
