EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the enchanting streets of Truro, Cornwall, around 1883. The view up St Georges Road offers a glimpse into the bustling atmosphere of this historic town. Standing tall and proud in the distance is Brunel's magnificent viaduct, an architectural marvel that has withstood the test of time. As our eyes wander through the image, we notice a quaint corner at Ferris Town where Eusebius Sutton once operated his beer retail business. Number 29 Ferris Town was home to his shop during this period, but mysteriously vanished from existence by 1889. It leaves us wondering about its fate and what stories might have unfolded within those walls. Photographed by Edwin Iddo Ellery, this snapshot freezes a moment forever lost to history. The black and white tones evoke a sense of nostalgia as we imagine ourselves strolling along these cobbled streets over a century ago. Truro's rich heritage comes alive through this photograph; it tells tales of everyday life and showcases how much has changed since then. Yet amidst all transformations, one constant remains: the enduring beauty of Cornwall's landscapes and architecture. This print serves as both a window into the past and a reminder that even though time may pass relentlessly, fragments of history can be preserved for generations to come thanks to institutions like Royal Cornwall Museum who safeguard such precious memories.
