Marcus Manilius, Roman astronomer

Marcus Manilius, Roman astronomer. This woodcut was made by Albrecht Durer in 1515. Manilius was a Roman author. He wrote a book called Astronomica around the year AD15, clearly influenced by the Phaenomena of Aratus. Maniliuss book deals mostly with astrology rather than astronomy, but it contains numerous insights into constellation lore. Taken from The Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer by Dr Willi Kurth (1936)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Marcus Manilius, a distinguished Roman astronomer and author. Created by the legendary artist Albrecht Durer in 1515, this woodcut beautifully captures the essence of Manilius' wisdom and classical influence. Manilius is depicted as a learned figure, holding an orb that symbolizes his profound understanding of the cosmos. His gaze reflects deep contemplation as he explores the mysteries of space and celestial bodies. With his scholarly appearance and intricate robes, he exudes an air of authority befitting his status as a prominent scientist during ancient Rome. While primarily known for his book Astronomica, written around AD15, it becomes apparent that astrology played a significant role in Manilius' work. Although astronomy takes center stage in modern science, this masterpiece reminds us that astrology held great importance during this era. The woodcut also offers insights into constellation lore—a testament to Manilius' comprehensive knowledge of both astronomical phenomena and astrological interpretations. This fusion between artistry and scientific exploration exemplifies the Renaissance period's fascination with merging disciplines to gain a deeper understanding of our world. Preserved through time by Dr Willi Kurth's meticulous curation in 1936, this remarkable artwork invites viewers to delve into history while appreciating its aesthetic appeal. As we admire this image today, we are reminded not only of Marcus Manilius' contributions but also how ancient civilizations like Rome paved the way for our present-day understanding of Earth science
