Carriage and Wagon Works Casualty Centre, 1962

The Casualty Centre in the Carriage and Wagons Works in Swindon was a well-equipped facility. The nurses employed there could deal with all manner of first aid emergencies. Their work often prevented employees from having to go to hospital, with some being able to return to work the same day. A similar centre was located within the Locomotives Works. EDITORS COMMENTS

Step into a snapshot of Swindon's industrial heritage with this vintage photograph print of Carriage and Wagon Works Casualty Centre in all its bustling glory. Taken in 1962, this image captures the heart of an era where safety was paramount on the factory floor. As part of STEAM Museum of the GWR's extensive archives, this photo tells a story of dedication to employee welfare at one of Swindon's most iconic industrial sites. The Casualty Centre within Carriage and Wagon Works was more than just a first-aid station - it was a hub for swift medical attention that prevented hospital visits whenever possible. Nurses on site were trained to handle the full spectrum of workplace accidents, from minor scrapes to more serious injuries. Their expertise allowed many employees to return to work within hours, minimizing downtime and ensuring production remained uninterrupted. This photograph is not only a testament to the importance placed on employee well-being but also a glimpse into Swindon's industrial past. As you gaze upon this nostalgic scene, remember that behind every face in this image lies a story of resilience, hard work, and dedication - all set against the backdrop of Britain's rich railway heritage.
