Dean Goods locomotive No. 2533 in War Department black livery

This official photograph of a Dean Goods locomotive No. 2533 was taken at Swindon Works in October 1939 prior to its shipment overseas. The locomotive bears it War Department black livery and new engine number, and would have also been fitted with Westinghouse brakes as part of its preparation for war service. 79 Dean Goods were shipped to France. But during the invasion of the France by Germany in 1940, there were heavy losses of these locomotives as a number were destroyed during fighting and the remainder fell under the control of German forces who operated them for their own use whilst in control of the country. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the formidable Dean Goods locomotive No. 2533, resplendent in its War Department black livery. Taken at Swindon Works in October 1939, just before its deployment overseas, this official photograph captures a moment frozen in time. The locomotive proudly displays its new engine number and is equipped with Westinghouse brakes as part of its preparation for war service. During World War II, a total of 79 Dean Goods locomotives were shipped to France to support the war effort. However, the invasion of France by Germany in 1940 brought about heavy losses for these mighty machines. Many were tragically destroyed during fierce fighting while others fell under German control and were utilized for their own purposes throughout their occupation. The significance of this image lies not only in its historical context but also in the resilience and adaptability demonstrated by these locomotives during times of conflict. They symbolize both the strength and vulnerability that characterized this tumultuous era. Preserved within the STEAM Museum of GWR's collection, this evocative photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served on railways during wartime. It stands as a testament to their unwavering dedication and courage amidst adversity - an enduring tribute to an extraordinary chapter in our shared history.
