Steer Point Station, Devon, c. 1898: A Glimpse into the Past This evocative photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, transporting us back in time to Steer Point Station in Devon, as it appeared around the turn of the twentieth century. The image, taken in the late 1890s, shows the picturesque station on the Plymouth to Yealmpton Line, nestled in the quaint village of Brixton, east of Plymouth. Steer Point Station opened its doors to the public in January 1898, offering a vital transport link to the local community. The station's charming red-brick buildings, with their ornate detailing and tall chimneys, exude an air of elegance and sophistication. The platform, bathed in sunlight, is dotted with passengers and their luggage, as they eagerly await the arrival of their trains. However, this idyllic scene was not to last. Steer Point Station closed its doors to passengers in 1930, although it briefly reopened during World War II in 1941 to accommodate the military. The station finally closed for good in 1947, marking the end of an era for the local community. Goods traffic continued until 1960, but the station's passenger services were no more. Today, Steer Point Station stands as a poignant reminder of a time when rail travel was an integral part of daily life. The photograph invites us to imagine the stories of the people who once passed through its doors, and to reflect on the profound impact that the railway had on the lives of those who lived in and around Brixton, Devon.
