Swindon Works Fire Brigade, 1916

This is a really impressive image of the Swindon Works Fire Brigade, taken in 1916. The smartly uniformed firemen are sat upon the Dennis Fire Engine which was purchased by the GWR in 1912. Being towed behind is an earlier oil fired steam fire engine. Being such a large industrial site Swindon Works had its own dedicated fire brigade in order to react quickly to any emergencies

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1916 showcases the remarkable Swindon Works Fire Brigade, a group of smartly uniformed firemen who were always prepared to tackle emergencies at the sprawling industrial site. The focal point of this image is the impressive Dennis Fire Engine, which was acquired by the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1912. Its sleek design and powerful capabilities made it an invaluable asset for firefighting operations. Positioned behind the Dennis Fire Engine is an earlier oil-fired steam fire engine, serving as a reminder of how far firefighting technology had advanced over time. This combination of modern and traditional equipment demonstrates the brigade's commitment to staying ahead of potential disasters. The dedication and professionalism exuded by these brave firefighters are evident in their crisp uniforms and helmets, symbolizing their readiness to face any challenge that may arise within Swindon Works. As employees of one of Britain's largest railway engineering complexes, they understood the importance of swift action during emergencies. This photograph offers a glimpse into history, capturing not only a moment frozen in time but also highlighting the significance placed on safety within such an industrial setting. It serves as a testament to both the ingenuity and resilience displayed by those who protected Swindon Works throughout its operation.
