EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut print, titled "China Clay - Escape," is a beautiful example of the monotone works produced by the talented artist Molly MacArthur, also known as Florence Mary Anderson, during the 1920s. A departure from her earlier, highly-decorative fairy art, these oriental-style woodcuts showcase MacArthur's mastery of intricate lines and delicate shading. Created in 1922, "China Clay - Escape" is a visual feast for the eyes, with its rich textures and evocative imagery. The title suggests a sense of freedom and release, as if the figures in the print are escaping from the confines of their surroundings. The use of monochrome tones adds to the ethereal quality of the artwork, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that transports the viewer to another world. MacArthur's Oriental-inspired style is evident in the intricate patterns and delicate details of the figures and objects depicted in the print. The fluid lines and graceful curves of the figures contrast with the more angular, geometric shapes of the background, creating a sense of balance and harmony. This stunning work of art is a testament to MacArthur's artistic versatility and her ability to adapt to new styles and techniques. It is a must-have for any collector of vintage illustrations or those with an appreciation for the beauty and intricacy of woodcut prints.
