Oyster shell with pearl C013 / 6623
Oyster shell with pearl. Pearls are accretions of nacre (calcium carbonate) secreted by certain oysters and mussels. The presence of a foreign body (such as a parasite or a grain of sand) within the shell triggers the secretion of nacre by the molluscs mantle. Thin layers are deposited on the irritant particle and, over several years, a pearl is formed. Although commercially valuable pearls are obtained from freshwater mussels and oysters, precious pearls can come from ocean oysters. Cultured pearls are cultivated by inserting fragments of clam shell into the shells of farmed mussels and oysters

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of an oyster shell with a precious pearl nestled within its depths. Pearls, known as accretions of nacre, are formed when certain oysters and mussels secrete calcium carbonate in response to the presence of foreign bodies like parasites or grains of sand. Over several years, thin layers of nacre are deposited on the irritant particle, resulting in the creation of a lustrous pearl. While commercially valuable pearls are typically obtained from freshwater mussels and oysters, this image reminds us that ocean oysters can also produce precious gems. Cultured pearls, on the other hand, are cultivated by carefully inserting fragments of clam shell into farmed mollusks' shells. Displayed against a striking black background in a natural history museum exhibit, this photograph captures both the scientific marvel and aesthetic allure found within nature's creations. The glossy texture and intricate details showcased in this still life composition highlight not only the geological significance but also the artistic value inherent in these gemstones. With its cut-out presentation style emphasizing every facet and curve, this image invites viewers to appreciate both Earth's science and mineralogy while admiring one of nature's most coveted treasures.
