EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Lt. General Sir Thomas Picton, an influential military figure during the Georgian era. Painted by Sir William Beechey in 1815, the year of Picton's tragic death at the Battle of Waterloo, the portrait is a poignant reminder of his military prowess and unwavering commitment to duty. Born in Wales in 1758, Picton rose through the ranks of the British Army, earning a reputation as a formidable and effective commander. His military career spanned several continents, with notable service in the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars. Despite his successes, Picton was a complex and controversial figure. Known for his fiery temper and no-nonsense approach, he was a polarizing presence within the military hierarchy. However, his leadership and tactical abilities were undeniable, and he was a key figure in several significant battles, including the Battle of Talavera and the Battle of Waterloo.
