EDITORS COMMENTS
Seldom does an aerial photograph encapsulate the essence of industry and recreation so vividly as this image of Ibstock's Elastic Factory, captured by Aerofilms Ltd in April 1946. The factory, operated by Clutsom and Kemp Ltd, is depicted as a sprawling complex of rectangular buildings, their red-tiled roofs contrasting sharply against the lush, green landscape. The factory's production lines hummed with activity, manufacturing elastic for various industries, contributing significantly to the post-war economic recovery. Adjacent to the factory lies a large, open playing field, dotted with clusters of trees and a few buildings, including what appears to be a pavilion. This idyllic space served as a vital respite for the factory workers, offering a space for leisure and relaxation. The image of children playing on the field, not visible in the photograph but certainly a common sight, underscores the importance of work-life balance even in the industrial heartland. The presence of the playing field also highlights the company's commitment to the wellbeing of its employees, a forward-thinking approach that was not yet common during the post-war era. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of industry and recreation, and the importance of creating a balanced work environment. The Elastic Factory at Ibstock, Leicestershire, stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of industry during the post-war period, while the adjacent playing field serves as a reminder of the value of community, leisure, and the importance of balancing work and play. This aerial photograph, captured by Aerofilms Ltd in April 1946, is an invaluable addition to the Historic England Archive, offering a unique perspective into the past and the interplay of various aspects of life in a post-war industrial town.
