EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Park Row, Knightsbridge, in the City of Westminster, Greater London. The image showcases a view looking north along the east terrace of Millss Buildings towards the picturesque terrace of houses on Park Row. These stunning late 18th-century Georgian terraced houses, once known as Hyde Park Row in 1939, stood strong through the trials and tribulations of World War II but sadly met their fate when Bowater House was constructed on this very spot. Bowater House itself was later demolished in 2006. The photograph by Charles William Prickett evokes a sense of nostalgia for these lost architectural gems that were an integral part of London's history. It serves as a poignant reminder of how time can bring both loss and destruction to even the most cherished structures. Though no longer standing today, these terraced houses represented an era characterized by elegance and grandeur. Their absence leaves behind a void that cannot be filled with modern developments alone. Prickett's work immortalizes this moment in time when these buildings still graced Park Row with their presence. Through his lens, we are transported back to an age where beauty and craftsmanship defined our cityscape—a testament to our shared heritage that should never be forgotten or overlooked.
