EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time on the M1 Motorway, near Watford Village. The image showcases a bustling Shell-BP petrol station at the headquarters of Project D, serving as a vital refuelling point for trucks and lorries during the 1950s construction era. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its historical context but also in the merger between two petroleum giants, Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) and British Petroleum (BP), who combined their UK marketing operations from 1932 to 1976. This collaboration transformed the landscape of fuel distribution across Britain. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to an era where motorways were still being developed and petrol stations played a crucial role in facilitating transportation across vast distances. The sight of these sturdy trucks lining up for refuelling serves as a testament to the growth and progress that was taking place during this period. The juxtaposition of modern infrastructure against the backdrop of rural Northamptonshire is striking, reminding us how far we have come since then. This image is not just about vehicles or construction; it encapsulates an entire chapter in our nation's history - one marked by innovation, collaboration, and transformation. Thanks to A© Historic England Archive for preserving this remarkable piece of our past so that future generations can appreciate and learn from it.
