Tuna bungalows and Mount Jomolhari or Chomolhari, on the border between Tibet and Bhutan, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Tuna Bungalows and the majestic Mount Jomolhari or Chomolhari, stand proudly on the border between Tibet and Bhutan. This image is taken from an intriguing album that offers a unique insight into a little-known campaign in world history: the British military expedition to Lhasa, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India under the authorization of Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, who was apprehensive of Russian influence and the perceived advance towards the border. The expedition eventually secured several concessions from Tibet, which was nominally under Chinese control at the time. However, the question of whether the endeavor was worth the return remains debatable. This album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to Colonel Younghusband, provides a fascinating glimpse into the expedition. Accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald, the expedition's progress is documented through various photographs, showcasing military scenes, monasteries, breathtaking scenery, towns, and local inhabitants. Mount Jomolhari, or Chomolhari, is a sacred mountain revered by the Bhutanese and Tibetan people. The Tuna Bungalows, located at the base of the mountain, served as the British military's base during their campaign. This photograph captures the rugged terrain, the resilience of the British military, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas. The album's historical significance lies in its ability to transport us back in time, offering a firsthand account of this intriguing chapter in history. The images within its pages provide a rare glimpse into the lives of the soldiers, the people they encountered, and the landscapes they traversed during the British military expedition to Lhasa.
