Wrights theory of the universe, 1750
Wrights theory of the universe. Diagram showing the Earth surrounded by concentric shells of stars, as published in An original theory or new hypothesis of the Universe (1750) by English astronomer Thomas Wright (1711-1786). In this book Wright gave the first explanation of the appearance of the Milky Way as being due to our immersion in a layer of stars. He proposed that the Sun is one of many stars orbiting around a Divine Centre and that the stars are distributed either in annuli (rings) or in thin, concentric, spherical shells (as seen here)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Thomas Wright's groundbreaking theory of the universe, as depicted in his book "An original theory or new hypothesis of the Universe" published in 1750. The diagram portrays a mesmerizing illustration of Earth enveloped by concentric shells of stars, shedding light on our place within the cosmos. Wright's revolutionary explanation for the appearance of the Milky Way takes center stage in this artwork. He proposed that our immersion in a layer of stars gives rise to this celestial phenomenon. Moreover, he postulated that our Sun is merely one among countless other stars orbiting around a Divine Centre. The intricate arrangement of annuli and thin, concentric spherical shells beautifully captures Wright's vision. This depiction offers an intriguing glimpse into how he believed stars were distributed throughout the universe. Steeped in history and scientific curiosity, this monochrome masterpiece transports us back to the 18th century when Wright challenged conventional astronomical beliefs with his innovative theories. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit to comprehend the vast mysteries beyond Earth. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking image, we are reminded of how far astrophysics has come since Wright's time. Yet it also prompts us to appreciate his pioneering contributions that laid foundations for future discoveries about galaxies, planets, and stellar formations.
