EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts the moment of Saint Stephen's martyrdom as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Chapter 7). Stephen, the first deacon of the early Christian church in Jerusalem, was falsely accused of blasphemy and brought before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish supreme council. Unwavering in his faith, Stephen delivered a powerful speech denouncing the council for rejecting the words of the prophets and persecuting the Holy Spirit. Enraged by his words, the council members cast him out of the city and stoned him to death. In this print, we see Stephen being stoned, with a crowd of angry men pelting him with stones. Above his head, a little angel hovers, its wings spread protectively. This angelic presence serves as a reminder of the promise of heavenly reward given to Stephen by Jesus himself, as recounted in the Scripture: "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God" (Acts 7:56). The image, titled "St. Stephen, the First Christian Martyr," is a powerful representation of the early Christian faith and the price that was paid for it. The print is a testament to the enduring power of religious art to inspire and captivate, and serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and conviction of the early Christian martyrs. This historical image, circa 35 AD, is attributed to the workshop of the renowned Flemish painter, Jan Gosselin. Gosselin, who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, was known for his mastery of religious themes and his ability to imbue his works with a deep sense of emotion and spirituality. This print, with its intricate details and vivid colors, is a testament to his artistic skill and his commitment to capturing the essence of the Christian faith.
