24 year old Joy fletcher and 19 year old Brenda Cawdell at work in the foundry

24 year old Joy fletcher and 19 year old Brenda Cawdell at work in the foundry. The white hot liquid metal can be seen on the moulds that they are clamping down. In the background is a man pouring the white hot metal into the moulds, which is carried round to the two girls to clamp down. One miss of the homer by either of these girls and their hands would be burnt off. The metal is 900 degrees centigrade. The work of 12 men depends on these two girls, who are the only women working in the foundry.

Behind the Flames - Women Powering the War Effort

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to Birmingham in 1942, amidst the chaos of World War II. The image captures two remarkable women, 24-year-old Joy Fletcher and 19-year-old Brenda Cawdell, fearlessly working side by side in a foundry. Their determination is palpable as they clamp down on moulds containing white hot liquid metal. The intense heat emanating from the molten metal is evident, reminding us of the immense danger these young women face daily. A man can be seen pouring the scorching liquid into the moulds behind them – his role crucial but dependent on their precision. These brave ladies hold an extraordinary responsibility; not only do their own lives hang in balance with each move they make but also those of twelve men who rely on them for success. They are pioneers in a male-dominated industry, representing resilience and strength during wartime. Their presence symbolizes more than just gender equality; it represents unwavering dedication to national defense and fortitude against adversity. These courageous workers embody countless other women who stepped up during this era to support their country's fight for freedom. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, let us remember that history was shaped not only by soldiers on battlefields but also by unsung heroes like Joy Fletcher and Brenda Cawdell – ordinary individuals performing extraordinary feats for a greater cause.
