The Relief of Lucknow by General Havelock, Indian Mutiny, 15 September 1857, (1880)

The Relief of Lucknow by General Havelock, Indian Mutiny, 15 September 1857, (1880). The siege of Lucknow was one of the major engagements of the uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. The mutiny had many underlying causes, but was sparked by the introduction of cartridges which were greased with animal fat. This outraged both Muslim and Hindu soldiers (sepoys), who made up the majority of the Indian army at the time. Although the mutiny was defeated in 1859, it led to the administration of India passing from the East India Company to the Crown. Lucknow itself was besieged by mutineers for 87 days from the outbreak of the mutiny until a column commanded by General Sir Henry Havelock broke through on 25th September 1857. Havelocks force was insufficient to break the siege however, and Lucknow was once again surrounded until finally relieved by another, larger force led by General Sir Colin Campbell on 25th November 1857

The Relief of Lucknow by General Havelock, Indian Mutiny, 15 September 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This powerful print captures a pivotal moment in the history of British rule in India. The image depicts the courageous efforts of General Sir Henry Havelock as he leads his troops to relieve the besieged city of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. The Indian Mutiny, which erupted in 1857, was fueled by various factors but ignited by the introduction of cartridges greased with animal fat. This act deeply offended both Muslim and Hindu soldiers within the Indian army. The siege of Lucknow lasted for an excruciating 87 days until General Havelock's column successfully broke through on September 25th, 1857. However, despite this initial breakthrough, Lucknow remained surrounded until it was ultimately relieved by a larger force led by General Sir Colin Campbell on November 25th that same year. Although defeated in 1859, this mutiny marked a turning point as it resulted in India transitioning from East India Company administration to direct control under the Crown. This historic photograph serves as a reminder of both the bravery displayed by General Havelock and his troops and also highlights one chapter within a broader struggle for independence and self-governance. It stands as a testament to those who fought against colonial oppression during this tumultuous period in India's past.
