Avebury ring

Avebury ring, aerial photograph. The circles of standing stones and the henge (ditch) at Avebury date from about 2500 BC. The entire site encompasses some 28 acres and comprises a perimeter ditch and bank enclosing an outer circle of stones and two inner circles of stones. The ditch and bank are approximately 0.4 km in diameter. The ditch, though still clearly visible, is about a third of its original depth of 10m. Within the perimeter is a circle of Sarsen stones, which have survived best on the western (left) half. Within the outer circle of stone were two smaller stone circles, one to the north and one to the south of the site, now separated by a road. The ring in the southern half has survived best. The site is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site. Photographed in Avebury, Wiltshire, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph showcases the majestic Avebury Ring, a remarkable archaeological site in Wiltshire, UK. Dating back to around 2500 BC, this ancient marvel encompasses approximately 28 acres of land and features a series of concentric circles formed by standing stones and a surrounding henge (ditch). The perimeter ditch and bank span an impressive diameter of about 0.4 km, although its original depth of 10m has eroded over time. Within the encompassing structure lies a circle of Sarsen stones that have best withstood the test of time on the western half. Additionally, two smaller stone circles can be found within the outer ring; however, they are now separated by a road. Remarkably, it is the southern half that has preserved these structures most effectively. Recognized as part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, this location holds immense historical significance. Its circular arrangement suggests astronomical connections from prehistoric times when religious practices were intertwined with celestial observations. Through this mesmerizing aerial photography captured by Science Photo Library in Avebury, we are transported back in time to witness remnants from our distant past. This image invites us to explore Britain's rich history while appreciating the enduring beauty and cultural importance held within these ancient stones.
