Loxodonta africana
This is a protected stronghold for the highly endangered Black or Hook-lipped rhinoceros which is now a CITES Appendix 1 listed species. From the original three rhinos captured from the Tsavo West area, a further three, then 15 more were introduced from the Nairobi National Park population. Now covering an area of 67 kms protected by a solar powered electric fence, numbers have increased to over 70 individuals (March 2006). Around 5 new calves are born every year. Unfortunately numbers of elephant and buffalo are also increasing in the sanctuary and are beginning to threaten availability of water and also damaging the vegetation.

. In this photo, we witness a fierce competition between two of Africa's most iconic creatures. The elephants of Ngulia Black Rhino Sanctuary are locked in an intense struggle as they strip bark off trees to satisfy their hunger. Little do they know that just a few meters away lies the protected stronghold of the highly endangered Black or Hook-lipped rhinoceros. Tsavo National Park West serves as a sanctuary for these magnificent rhinos, which have faced the threat of extinction. From humble beginnings with only three captured individuals, their population has grown to over 70 individuals today. Each year brings new hope with around five adorable calves being born. However, it seems that success comes at a price. As elephant and buffalo numbers also increase within the sanctuary, water availability and vegetation suffer from their destructive habits. It's a delicate balance between preserving one species while managing others' impact on the environment. This incredible photograph by Mark Boulton captures both the beauty and challenges faced by wildlife conservationists in Kenya.
