Hms Queen Elizabeth Leaves Portsmouth for Helicopter Trials
Pictured are two RAF Chinook helicopters landing on HMS Queen Elizabeth for the first time.
HMS Queen Elizabeth, the newest aircraft carrier in the Royal Navy embarked two RAF chinooks in early 2018. The Chinooks (later joined by Merlin helicopters) took part in various flying serials as part of HMS Queen Elizabeths sea trials.
In addition to the joint force of Royal Air Force and Royal Navy F-35B Lightnings and their pilots, the air wing is expected to be composed of a Maritime Force Protection package of nine anti-submarine Merlin HM2 and four or five Merlin for airborne early warning; alternatively, a Littoral Manoeuvre package could include a mix of RAF Chinooks, Army Apaches, Merlin HC4 and Wildcat HM2

EDITORS COMMENTS
The photo captures a historic moment as two RAF Chinook helicopters gracefully land on the deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth for the very first time. This significant event took place during the early stages of 2018 when the newest aircraft carrier in the Royal Navy embarked on helicopter trials. As part of HMS Queen Elizabeth's sea trials, these Chinooks, later joined by Merlin helicopters, participated in various flying serials. The aim was to test and evaluate their performance alongside a joint force of Royal Air Force and Royal Navy F-35B Lightnings and their pilots. Looking ahead, it is anticipated that the air wing aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth will consist not only of fighter jets but also a Maritime Force Protection package comprising nine anti-submarine Merlin HM2 helicopters and four or five airborne early warning Merlins. Alternatively, a Littoral Manoeuvre package could include a mix of RAF Chinooks, Army Apaches, Merlin HC4s, and Wildcat HM2s. This image showcases both power and precision as these iconic military aircraft touch down onto the ship's flight deck amidst swirling heat haze. With its Union Jack flag proudly displayed in the background, this photograph encapsulates an important chapter in naval history as HMS Queen Elizabeth continues to strengthen her capabilities with formidable air support from these versatile Chinook helicopters.
