EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary duo of Harry Makepeace and Nigel Howard, representing Lancashire County Cricket Club during the 1947 season. On the left stands Harold "Harry". Makepeace, a true cricket icon who dedicated his career to Lancashire from 1906 to 1930. With an impressive record of 487 first-class games, he amassed a staggering total of 25,207 runs and achieved an incredible 42 centuries. Makepeace's talent extended beyond cricket as he also played for England in four tests during the intense Ashes series of 1920/1. Remarkably, he joined an elite group of only twelve England Double Internationals for both cricket and football alongside his teammate Jack Sharp. On the right side is Nigel Howard, who captained Lancashire from 1949 to1953. His leadership skills were not limited to county level as he had the honor of leading England in four tests during their tour of India in 1951/2 – a remarkable achievement considering he was one of the last amateurs to do so. This extraordinary photograph showcases two exceptional individuals who have left an indelible mark on English cricket history. (Caption: Colorsport / Wilkes)
