Road Cycling - 1970 UCI Road World Race Championships - Mens Professional Race
Defending champion, Hollands Harmen Harm Ottenbros (#66) and Bahamas Leonard Boston Blackie Miller, before the start at Mallory Park, Leicester. Ottenbros finished in 20th place.
A relative unknown, Ottenbros was a surprise winner the previous year when the race was staged in Belgium, taking advantage to break away when many of the other riders were marking home favourite Eddy Merckx. He had a disastrous year as World Champion, with his team folding as well as missing much of the season through injury. He was also ostracised by many of other riders in the peloton who believed he had no right to cyclings biggest prize, and he struggled even to get start money for some races.
Miller was also heavyweight boxing champion of the Bahamas in the 1960s.
