EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, OP07079, captures the devastating aftermath of the Exeter Blitz during World War II. Taken from the tower of St Mary Arches Church, the image looks east towards Exeter Cathedral, which stands proudly yet incomplete against the backdrop of destruction. The bombing raid on May 4, 1942, left a significant portion of the historic city in ruins, with the cathedral's ancient structures sustaining severe damage. The photograph by Margaret Tomlinson for the National Building Record, taken in the immediate aftermath, serves as a poignant reminder of the destruction wrought during those dark days of war. The ruins of buildings, including those of the cathedral close, are scattered across the scene, their once grand facades reduced to piles of rubble and debris. The image underscores the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity and the determination to rebuild and restore the cherished architectural treasures of Exeter.
