Measuring 39.1 x 53.3 cm, this masterpiece is housed in the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Originally attributed to Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, it is now believed that his son Domenico painted this piece during their collaborative work on the Residenz at Würzburg. The scene depicts Abraham, holding a burning torch and a knife, preparing to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac as an act of faithfulness to God. In this poignant moment, Isaac kneels beside his father, unaware of the impending tragedy about to befall him. "The Sacrifice of Isaac" exemplifies themes such as love, obedience, and religious faith found within biblical narratives. This profound depiction captures both the emotional turmoil faced by Abraham and Isaac's innocence in the face of adversity. With its exquisite baroque style infused with rococo elements and meticulous attention to detail, this painting stands as a testament not only to Tiepolo's artistic prowess but also serves as a visual representation of one of Judaism's most significant stories from the Book of Genesis.
