A coloured cotton wall hanging, showing six comets, numbered from 1 to 6. At each corner is a brass eyelet from which to hang the piece, while the number 251 is printed in the lower left hand corner.
This is one of nine wall hangings now in the NMM, all on astronomical themes, which were produced by the Working Men's Educational Union. They were printed lithographically on cotton, probably to avoid paper duty. The hangings would have been used in lectures, held at various locations, to illustrate the latest advances in knowledge. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the beauty and mystery of comets in the 19th century. Created by the Working Men's Educational Union, this coloured cotton wall hanging showcases six comets, each numbered from 1 to 6. The intricate design is complemented by brass eyelets at each corner for easy hanging.
Printed lithographically on cotton, these astronomical-themed wall hangings were likely produced to avoid paper duty and used in lectures to educate audiences on the latest advances in knowledge. The Working Men's Educational Union was a philanthropic society dedicated to providing education to the working classes, making these pieces both beautiful and educational.
The attention to detail in this piece is evident, with even the number "251" printed in the lower left-hand corner adding an extra layer of significance. As part of a collection of nine similar wall hangings now housed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this piece offers a glimpse into how scientific knowledge was shared and appreciated during that time period.
With its vibrant colors and celestial subject matter, this print serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring fascination with space and our place within it.
