EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Porta San Lorenzo, inter ageres" etching with brown wash by Agostino Tofanelli. The artwork is a part of the private collection and portrays the magnificent Porta San Lorenzo in Rome. Originally built by Augustine to support the Acquae Marcia, Tepula, and Julia over the Via Tiburtina, this arch was later incorporated into the Aurelian Wall as the Porta Tiburtina. In 403 AD, Honorius restored it and added an external facade with five small openings. Due to its proximity to the basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, it became known as the Porta San Lorenzo. Engraved by Pietro Fontana, this exquisite etching captures every intricate detail of this historical landmark. The artist's use of brown wash adds depth and texture to bring out its architectural beauty. Known also as Capo de Bove or Porta Taurina among locals, this gate holds immense historical significance within Rome's rich heritage. It stands as a testament to ancient Roman engineering prowess and serves as a reminder of their mastery in constructing monumental structures that have endured through time. Displayed here in all its grandeur, this print allows us to appreciate both Tofanelli's artistic talent and Rome's remarkable history. Its presence in any art collection would undoubtedly add an air of sophistication while paying homage to one of Italy's most iconic landmarks.
