EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the essence of Martin Cash, the notorious bushranger of Van Diemen's Land in 1843. Priced at one shilling, this print takes us back to a time when lawlessness reigned and legends were born. Martin Cash's life was nothing short of extraordinary. Originally sentenced to seven years for housebreaking, he arrived in Sydney in 1828 before moving to Tasmania nine years later. It was there that his criminal escapades truly began. Escaping from custody multiple times, Cash formed an infamous trio with Lawrence Kavenagh and George Jones. Together, they terrorized the region by robbing inns and homesteads with audacity that seemed unmatched. However, their reign came to an end when Cash was captured after shooting a constable in 1843. Sentenced to Norfolk Island for life, he surprisingly transformed into a model prisoner and eventually earned a conditional pardon. The lithographed poster showcased here is an advertisement for Cash's autobiography titled "The Adventures of Martin Cash". Edited by James Lester Burke, it provides a firsthand account of his thrilling exploits as a bushranger. This print not only serves as a historical artifact but also offers us insight into the allure surrounding outlaws like Martin Cash during Australia's colonial era. It reminds us that even amidst chaos and crime, stories emerge that captivate our imaginations for generations to come.
