King Milinda asks Questions, BC 140 (litho)

8661016 King Milinda asks Questions, BC 140 (litho) by Ruith, Horace van (1839-1923); Private Collection; (add.info.: King Milinda asks Questions, Bc.140. After the deaths of Seleukos Nikator and Asoka, the great empires they controlled broke up, and on the north-western frontiers of India beyond the Indus the country (Baktria and Parthia) came to be held by rulers of Greek descent. Conspicuous amongst these was Menander of Kabul, who penetrated far into Northern India, and created a capital at Sagala (Sialkot in the Panjab). He had strong leanings towards Buddhism, and his religious disputations with the great teacher Nagasena have been preserved in a famous classic, the Milindapanha, the Questions of Milinda (Menander). EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph depicts King Milinda asking questions during the 2nd century BC, a pivotal moment in history when Greek rulers held sway over parts of India beyond the Indus River. Menander of Kabul, a prominent figure of Greek descent, ventured deep into Northern India and established his capital at Sagala (present-day Sialkot in Pakistan). Known for his affinity towards Buddhism, King Menander engaged in profound religious debates with the renowned teacher Nagasena. The dialogue between King Milinda and Nagasena was immortalized in the classic text known as the Milindapanha or "Questions of Milinda." This exchange delved into complex philosophical and spiritual concepts that continue to intrigue scholars and practitioners alike. Through this lithograph, artist Horace van Ruith captures the essence of this intellectual discourse, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry that characterized ancient India. The intricate details and expressive gestures depicted in this artwork bring to life a significant chapter in Indian history where East met West. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to witness a meeting of minds between two great thinkers from different worlds—a timeless reminder of the power of curiosity and dialogue to bridge divides and foster understanding across diverse traditions.
