The immense Persian fleet, carrying an army of half a million men, set out to conquer Greece with the specific goal of destroying Athens and Eretria. The city of Eretria fell after a six-day siege, being sacked, burned, and its inhabitants enslaved. The galleys are shown advancing towards the island of Euboea with determination and power, symbolizing the might of the Persian Empire at that time. This print is not just a visual representation but also serves as a reminder of the brutal realities of war and conquest in ancient times. It offers viewers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in history when empires clashed and destinies were decided on the battlefield. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the clash between East and West that shaped the course of civilization.
